This abstract figure was cut by Erich Wichmann, from who knows what, and when. It’s all curves and points, like a simplified Matisse drawing, where the artist is thinking through a form in black and white, with maybe a block printing method? The stark contrast between the figure and the black background makes it pop, almost aggressively. I’m drawn to the little table, a simple surface that creates a stage for the drama of the figure. The artist uses only a few strokes to represent flowers on the table – this makes the artist's touch apparent. It's a small but confident statement, a conversation with artists like Kirchner, maybe? It seems to be an exploration of how much you can say with so little, and how you can keep a piece open to interpretation.
