This sepia toned photograph captures the Stables at Mheer Castle, in I think, the Netherlands. It was made by an anonymous photographer working with Monumentenzorg. I wonder what kind of relationship this anonymous photographer had with the building. Were they local or did they travel for work? The vines creeping up the building, and the neat rows of little windows under the eaves, give the building a kind of anthropomorphic feel. It is very still but I am sure it was not quiet! The photographer has chosen a position that gives a sense of the building’s structure and solidity, but maybe it's slightly off-center. That slight angle feels very human, and that makes the building feel less aloof. These old buildings, like paintings, they all teach us something about how to see the world.
