Portret van een man met snor in uniform

Curatorial notes
Albert Delabarre captured this dignified man in uniform with a photographic print sometime in the 19th century. The buttons and epaulettes are not mere decoration; they are symbols of duty and order, reflecting a world striving for structure amid chaos. The uniform itself has echoes through time. From ancient Roman legions to medieval knights, the uniform has always been a signifier of collective identity and purpose. Note how similar the arrangement of buttons are to those found on, say, a Renaissance Duke. The subconscious appeal of such symbols lies in their promise of protection and belonging, resonating deeply with our primal needs for security. These symbols, however, are not static. They are continually reinterpreted, repurposed, and sometimes even subverted, reflecting the ever-changing currents of history. The military uniform is a recurring motif, a visual echo that reminds us of humanity's ongoing dance with power, order, and the specter of conflict.
