This bowl was made by the Handicraft Guild of Minneapolis sometime between 1904 and 1918. I can see that it's made of copper, but it almost glows with a honeyed sheen, doesn't it? Look how the maker pierced the metal, creating a frieze of stylized motifs, like a secret language etched into the surface. What was it like for the artist to slowly coax this form into being, carefully cutting away at the metal? I can imagine the concentration, the slow turning of the bowl, always working outwards from the centre. They’re pulling something into being with their hands, making the copper sing. There is a simple elegance to the form. This bowl reminds me that the impulse to create, to shape raw materials into objects of beauty, is a fundamental human desire. What will you put in it?
