This print was made by Philippus Jacobus Brepols in the Netherlands. It is called "Als gij, o lieve jeugd! uw lessen hebt geleerd, / Dan zij deez' prent het loon, waarmeê gij wordt vereerd / Que vous aurez appris, enfants, votre leçon / Que cette image soit alors pour vous un don." The collection of sixteen vignettes shows children at play. The print is pedagogical, as the title suggests, acting as a reward for children who have learned their lessons. It seems to be a page torn from a book and, as such, points to the rise of print culture, and the culture of childhood, in the Netherlands at the time. The presence of both Dutch and French in the title also speaks to the specific cultural history of this place and time: the rise of nationalism and its intersection with the lingering influence of the French language and culture, particularly among the upper classes. To understand the significance of this work more fully, we might investigate the history of education in the Netherlands, the rise of children's literature, and the complex relationship between Dutch and French culture in the early 19th century.
