This sketchbook was crafted by Eugène Delacroix between 1852 and 1854, comprising 46 pages, mostly with sketches. Bound in a dark blue cover with gold lettering, the book’s materiality reflects a moment in history when industrial processes began influencing artistic practice. While the drawings within might showcase Delacroix’s individual genius, the book itself hints at broader social changes. The mass production of paper and bookbinding techniques made sketchbooks like these increasingly accessible. Think about the labor involved; from the papermakers to the binders, a whole workforce contributed to making these pages available for Delacroix’s ideas. This album offered Delacroix both a functional tool, and an intimate space to experiment, playing a crucial role in the creative process, and inviting us to reconsider the boundaries between craft, design, and fine art.
