Robert Frank made "Paris 28" using black and white film. Although undated, the piece encapsulates his exploration of postwar society. In this work, we see a series of frames, each offering a glimpse into a sculptor's studio, perhaps reflecting Frank’s own transient existence. The images capture the artist and his work at different moments, a kind of voyeuristic approach. Frank, who was a Swiss immigrant photographing America, was deeply attuned to outsider status. This theme permeates his work, capturing what he described as the “the kind of loneliness, and the feeling of being an outsider.” The photo-strip format, with its multiple takes, mimics the fragmented nature of memory, and invites us to consider how identity is constructed through repetition and difference. "Paris 28" reflects Frank’s engagement with personal and emotional dimensions of art, offering a narrative about the artist’s role in society, the creative process, and the search for meaning.
