Kawanabe Kyōsai painted this hanging scroll with ink and color on paper during the Meiji period. The materials themselves—paper, ink, mineral pigments—are traditional, yet Kyōsai's approach updates traditional Japanese painting with a newfound sense of realism. Note how the texture of the paper dictates the flow and spread of the ink, particularly in the rendering of the rock and tree bark. The artist manipulated the ink to create a sense of depth, using varied brushstrokes to evoke the roughness of the surfaces. The materiality of the painting is such that it captures the natural world, but also expresses the artist's individual skill and touch. Kyōsai’s attention to detail, particularly in the eagle’s feathers and piercing gaze, demonstrates a deep understanding of his subject. The composition reflects a keen observation of nature, combined with the rich tradition of Japanese ink painting. This work challenges the artificial divide between fine art and craft, and invites us to appreciate the deep skill and labor embedded in the artwork.
