Paul Delvaux painted “Woman in a Cave” and it's like a sepia dream made real. The colours are muted, like old photographs, with browns and creams that give it a mysterious feel. I can imagine Delvaux, brush in hand, carefully building up the layers, trying to capture the eerie stillness of the scene. What was he thinking as he painted this woman, her gaze averted, a mirror showing us another version of herself? The paint is smooth, almost glassy, giving it a surreal quality. The lace spilling from the mirror is rendered with such fine detail, a sort of invitation into this strange world. It makes me think of other surrealists, like Magritte, with their juxtapositions of the ordinary and the bizarre. Artists are always riffing off each other, creating a visual conversation that spans time. Painting isn't just about making pretty pictures, it's about asking questions, exploring the unknown. It leaves us space to wonder, to feel, to find our own meanings within the image.
