Christian Kongstad Petersen made this drawing of “The Aunt in Blunderstone” sometime in his life with what looks like ink on paper. The whole thing is built up with these tiny, scratchy lines that give the image a real sense of texture. It’s cool to see how he uses this technique to create light and shadow, especially on the figure and the wall behind her. It’s like he’s carving the image out of the paper itself. Look at the way the marks are layered to describe the folds in her dress. Or the way he captures the light from the window. You can almost feel the quiet, contemplative mood of the scene. It makes me think of Hammershøi. Petersen shows us that art is an ongoing conversation, remixing the past in unexpected ways.
