Editor: Maurizio Cattelan's "La Rivoluzione siamo noi," from the year 2000. It seems to be a sculpture using found objects...it gives off a very odd and slightly unsettling feeling, hanging there like that. How do you interpret this work? Curator: Oh, Maurizio. Never one to shy away from a bit of chaos, is he? To me, this piece is like catching a glimpse of ourselves in a funhouse mirror – warped, perhaps, but undeniably familiar. I like to imagine the 'we' in the title refers to all of us, the would-be revolutionaries, all bundled up and conveniently hanging on a rack, ready to be donned and discarded as fashion dictates. Doesn't it make you wonder, is rebellion just another trend these days? Or, perhaps, it's a tongue-in-cheek commentary on leadership. After all, how many leaders have we seen dangling precariously, pretending to carry the weight of the world? Editor: That's interesting. I never thought about the "we" in the title referring to a collective. So, you’re seeing this more as social commentary rather than some kind of individual crisis? Curator: Well, isn't the personal always political, darling? Maurizio is brilliant at blurring those lines. Perhaps it's both, maybe a bit neither! What do you make of the empty suit? Editor: It's both sad and funny. It shows how easily a symbol can become hollow. Almost like the idea of revolution itself. Curator: Exactly. Maurizio excels in using humour to unpack complex societal anxieties. The simplicity is deceptive. After seeing that work it has become almost unbearable when i see one of these valet stands in fancy hotels...makes me shiver. Editor: I never considered how humour can be such a powerful tool for exploring serious themes. This was insightful, thank you! Curator: Anytime! Keep looking, keep questioning!
