This handwoven textile, Amendil, was made by Ait Ammeln Amazigh artists, but we don't know when. The simple palette of white, red, yellow and brown is really refreshing. You can tell the artist has gone with a process of using what they had to hand and applying the colours in a methodical, considered way. The texture of the woven material itself, the fringe and the embroidered shapes feel really grounded in the earth. The geometric patterns are evenly spaced, with an amazing level of detail. Look how each is slightly different from the last. I am reminded of the geometric patterns of Anni Albers, who also explored the possibilities of woven textiles. For me, this piece shows that the conversation between art and craft is alive and well. So, take your time and let the Amendil draw you into its world.
