Donald Greason made this drawing of a church in Shelburne using what looks like ink and wash. It’s all about the process, right? You can almost see him there, squinting at the church, deciding what to keep and what to let go. The color is muted, just shades of gray, which gives it this kind of dreamy, quiet feel. The marks are loose, like he's not trying to be too precise, and there's this beautiful balance between the sharp lines of the steeple and the soft washes of the trees. Look at the way the shadows pool at the base of the church! It’s like he’s built the whole thing out of light and shadow. It feels spontaneous, but so sure of itself. It reminds me a bit of some of Agnes Martin’s landscapes – that same quiet attention to the world, but translated into something deeply personal. It’s less about the church itself, and more about how we see it.
