René Magritte made this painting, "Fashionable People," with oil on canvas, though we don't know exactly when. Look how the flat planes of color create a strange sense of depth. It’s like the painting is breathing. There's a stillness to this piece, but it's a loaded stillness, right? That pawn-like figure, smooth and cool, placed against a fiery backdrop. The textures are so different, from the stark, almost airbrushed quality of the pawn to the hazy blend of the sky. Notice that little flame on the horizon, a spot of pure energy, and how it throws the rest of the scene into sharp relief. Magritte’s work always feels like a puzzle, and maybe that’s the point. It reminds me a little of de Chirico's dreamscapes, but with a cooler, more detached vibe. What do you make of it?
