This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige captures a rest area near Kashiwahara, framing a view of Mount Fuji. Dominating the composition, Mount Fuji has, since ancient times, been revered as a sacred symbol of Japan, representing divine power and immortality. We see this motif echoed across centuries and cultures. Mountains as spiritual symbols appear, for example, in Chinese landscape painting, where they represent the connection between heaven and earth. In the West, the Romantics, like Caspar David Friedrich, also used mountain peaks to evoke spiritual awe and the sublime. The travelers pausing at Kashiwahara remind us of the human journey through life, set against the eternal backdrop of the mountain. These transient figures unknowingly mirror our own fleeting existence, a poignant reminder of the cyclical nature of life and the enduring power of symbols to connect us across time.
