This drawing of Christ appearing before his disciples was made with graphite on paper by the Master of the Egmont Albums. The artist lays down a dense matrix of marks, hatching and cross-hatching to model the figures’ forms. Consider the nature of drawing itself. The artist's hand moves across the paper to build this image, so the appearance of the work is deeply influenced by the capacity of the material. The use of graphite allows the artist to apply varying degrees of pressure and density to create an amazing range of tonal values and textures. The marks themselves are the end result of a process that merges human skill with the intrinsic qualities of the medium. The artist's mastery of materials and techniques blurs the line between craft and fine art. We are invited to think about art not just in terms of what it depicts, but also how the material and means of production contribute to its overall meaning and impact.
