Staande man met een stok

Curatorial notes
Isaac van Ostade sketched this standing man with a stick using pen in brown and gray ink. The walking stick, a prominent symbol, extends beyond mere support. It is reminiscent of the scepter, an emblem of authority passed down through rulers across civilizations, from ancient Egypt to medieval Europe. The staff is, at once, associated with pilgrims and wanderers, guiding them along their paths. We see echoes of this motif even in religious art. Think of Moses, who wielded his staff to part the Red Sea. Consider, too, the image of the shepherd, a symbol of divine care. The stick is a complex symbol, a cultural echo that resonates through history and invites us to contemplate the interplay between power, guidance, and the human journey.
