"Variant/Adobe" is a painting made by Josef Albers using oil on paper. Albers was a central figure in the Bauhaus movement, which sought to integrate art, craft, and technology. After the Bauhaus was shut down by the Nazi's Albers immigrated to the USA. His “Homage to the Square” series, of which this painting is one variant, explores how colors interact and affect our perception. "I became aware," he said, "that the material of color is boundless. Color is everywhere." In this work, the nested squares create an illusion of depth and movement, playing with our sense of space and form. The colors chosen evoke a sense of warmth and earthiness, reminiscent of the American Southwest that impacted his later works. Albers's exploration of color theory was groundbreaking, influencing generations of artists and designers. His teachings emphasized the subjective experience of color. He invites us to slow down, observe, and question our assumptions about the world around us.
