Editor: Here we have a reproduction of a print, made before 1887, after Michelangelo’s "The Three Fates," which I see is in monochrome. I find the poses of the figures quite striking and rather unsettling. What do you see in this piece, Professor? Curator: Primarily, I am drawn to the formal arrangement. Note the carefully constructed pyramidal composition. This lends a sense of stability and gravity, in direct contrast with the suggested disquietude you sensed. Further, observe the expert handling of light and shadow, or chiaroscuro, which defines the musculature and drapery, lending the figures both volume and depth. This masterful use of light is critical. Editor: Yes, I see how the stark contrasts create a dramatic effect. But isn’t the subject matter also important? I mean, these are the Fates! Curator: While the narrative is relevant, a Formalist reading directs our attention to how meaning is generated through form. Ask yourself, how does the artist use line, shape, and value to express the complex thematic material? Does the surface, whether smooth or textured, contribute to the reading of this artwork? Editor: I never thought about it that way, focusing just on the visual elements themselves rather than the story they tell. Curator: Exactly! The emphasis here isn't solely on what is depicted, but how. Considering the work's structure can unlock new levels of understanding and appreciation, regardless of its historical context or meaning. How do you see the visual and textual information combining on this page? Editor: This has given me so much to consider about the structure of this print. Thanks for the different lens!
