Robert Frank made this contact sheet, "Florida 6," with, I'm guessing, a 35mm camera and film, at some point in his life. It's like a painter's sketchbook, a way of seeing what you've got, what you've been up to. Each frame is a little world, a moment captured, but together they tell a bigger story. It's all about the grit, the grain, the immediacy. I'm drawn to the darkroom process here, the way he's selected certain frames with a red marker – decisions made in the dark, literally and figuratively. The images themselves? Reflections on water, snippets of everyday life, a cow, a person. Each frame feels raw and unfiltered, like a glimpse into Frank's stream of consciousness. It reminds me of the work of Garry Winogrand, another street photographer who wasn't afraid to capture the messy, chaotic beauty of real life. But, like all good art, it leaves you with more questions than answers.
