Friedensreich Hundertwasser made this drawing, 531 Jew's House in Austria, with marker pens. I love the naive directness of Hundertwasser’s marks, that scribbly, slightly impatient way he has of making lines. The color is laid down without any fuss, a simple shorthand for things. It reminds me of outsider art. He’s building this image one intuitive mark at a time. I bet he wasn’t overthinking it. I can see him trying to make sense of space, in a child-like way, not getting it quite ‘right’, but instead inventing his own visual language. Those bright red and yellow against the cool green and blue are singing. There’s no blending or softening, just pure, unadulterated color. It feels so good to look at! You know, sometimes I think that as artists we’re all just trying to have a conversation with each other, across time. Like, Hundertwasser must have been looking at Paul Klee, right?
