Cornelis Galle I created this engraving, “Catharina Has a Vision of Christ During the Eucharist,” sometime before 1650. Observe the central motif: a vision of the Christ Child appearing to Saint Catherine during the Eucharist, set against a backdrop of divine radiance. This motif echoes images of divine apparitions throughout history, from ancient sun gods to the Virgin Mary. The infant Christ, holding a cross, appears on a plate. The symbolism harkens back to pagan rituals of sacrifice and renewal, now transformed into a symbol of Christian salvation. Consider how this imagery has morphed across cultures: the sun disk of Akhenaten, the halo of the Buddha, and now the radiant light surrounding Christ. These symbols tap into a universal human desire for transcendence, each culture imbuing them with their own narratives. It’s a powerful force engaging viewers on a deep, subconscious level. Ultimately, the infant Christ embodies both innocence and divine power, resurfacing and evolving through history.
