Carel Adolph Lion Cachet made this drawing for a hanging lamp with graphite on paper. I love how rudimentary it is! It makes me wonder if I could design my own lamp. The artist has created an image that shows an idea in progress. I can just imagine him grappling with the weight and material properties of this hanging lamp, probably thinking about balance. It looks like he has drawn and redrawn each line until it is just so. Look at those overlapping curvilinear shapes! The linear elements on grid paper create something that is both precise and intuitive. These lines seem to emerge from the artist’s own imagination, inviting us to imagine alongside him, dreaming up new aesthetic possibilities.
