Johannes Bosboom made this graphite drawing of a church interior in the Netherlands sometime in the 19th century. During this period, Dutch artists returned to the religious spaces of the past, creating a vision of the national identity based on the values of the 17th century. Bosboom was known for his detailed architectural studies and you can see that on display here. Note the monumental arches and vaulted ceilings, and the way the artist pays close attention to the play of light and shadow within the sacred space. During this time, the Dutch Reformed Church exerted considerable influence on social and political life. Artists like Bosboom, therefore, presented the church as a symbol of stability and moral authority. Analyzing the architectural and art historical context of such images allows us to understand more about the period. We can look at the records of religious institutions, architectural plans, and writings by contemporary social commentators to find out more.
