Joseph Vogel made this drawing, called Vision, using graphite on paper, but we don't know exactly when. The tonal work here is really something. Vogel uses very fine, controlled marks to build up these deep areas of black and grey. This reminds me a bit of Max Beckmann, particularly the angular presentation of figures and use of symbolism. Look how the space is compressed and ambiguous, and how the narrative elements seem disjointed and dreamlike. It’s like he’s letting us glimpse a world that exists just beyond our normal perception. There’s a lot going on formally, but I am particularly drawn to the contrast between the sharp lines of the geometric shapes and the more organic forms of the figures and animals. The artist lets the medium do its thing, embracing the gritty texture of the graphite, and the tonal variations that this creates. It's a great reminder that art doesn't always need to provide answers, but can be a catalyst for questions and contemplation.
