Editor: Here we have a page of sketches by John Flaxman, held at the Tate. The delicate graphite outlines depict various urns and decorative objects. I’m struck by their ephemeral quality. What do you see in these designs? Curator: They whisper of Neoclassical restraint, don’t they? Flaxman, steeped in antiquity, offers us glimpses into a world obsessed with order, balance and idealized forms. Imagine these adorning a grand estate. What feelings do they stir in you? Editor: A sense of calm, perhaps, but also a wistful longing for a bygone era. Curator: Exactly! They're echoes of a world striving for perfection, filtered through Flaxman's own artistic sensibility. A lovely dance between dream and design.
