Manuela Sambo’s ‘Moon Suk’ has been brought into being through layers of color and symbol. I find myself sympathizing with the artist and the challenges they faced in its creation. What was she thinking when she made this? The way she’s combined the turquoise and teal blue of the figure with an earthy palette of reds and browns… it's unexpected, and it pulls you in. The effect is both alluring and unsettling. Look at the figure’s skin—it’s not just a flat color, but alive with a network of intricate patterns. What do they mean? This woman, with her elegant headdress, feels like she’s arrived from another time and place. Her expression has a sharp bite. Sambo is exploring identity, maybe a critique of beauty, or even an assertion of power. It reminds me a little of Frida Kahlo's self-portraits, which are so intimate and bold. Ultimately, art is an ongoing conversation across time, with artists inspiring one another. Sambo’s painting, with its embrace of ambiguity and uncertainty, offers multiple readings, opening a space for us to bring our own interpretations.
