Johannes Tavenraat made this drawing, "Vrouw met hoofddoek," using pen and brown ink on paper. It may seem simple, but the choice of materials here really influences how we see the subject. The ink, fluid and immediate, allows for quick capturing of form and expression. Notice how Tavenraat uses the varying thickness and darkness of the lines to create depth and shadow, particularly in the folds of the headscarf. The absorbency of the paper also plays a role, as the ink bleeds slightly, softening the edges and lending a sense of intimacy to the portrait. Drawings like this were often studies, made in preparation for larger paintings. In its own right, the medium encourages a sense of direct connection with the artist’s hand, offering us a glimpse into his working process. By focusing on these materials and methods, we can better appreciate the artistic skill involved, challenging any notions of craft as being somehow separate from "high art."
