Christian Royal made this ceramic cross, using clay and glaze. The appeal of this work lies in its materiality. Royal has exploited the inherent qualities of clay: its ability to be molded, and its transformation when fired. The glossy green glaze, pooling in the recesses of the decorative relief, adds a layer of visual interest. Ceramics has a complex history, spanning utilitarian craft and high art. Early examples were hand-built, but today the medium is frequently associated with industrial production – think of tableware, roof tiles, and sanitary ware. This ceramic cross occupies a curious middle ground. The piece evokes devotional objects while reflecting the more recent rise of studio ceramics. Ultimately, this cross invites us to consider the broader relationship between belief, artistry, and the everyday objects that shape our lives.
