Robert Frank made this photographic work, "Early New York City 78", with film in the mid-twentieth century. Just looking at this, I feel like I’m rifling through Frank's studio, finding contact sheets strewn on a desk, catching a glimpse into his process. Imagine Frank walking the streets of New York, camera in hand, a flâneur with a purpose. What was he thinking as he snapped these shots? Each frame feels like a fleeting moment, a fragment of urban life caught in time. The gritty textures and stark contrasts speak to a city in constant motion, full of contrasts. The arrangement, too, is deliberate. It's like a visual poem, where each frame resonates with the others, creating a larger narrative about the city and its inhabitants. He captures a certain grittiness that reminds me of the New York School photographers like Helen Levitt, yet it feels deeply personal. It’s a whole conversation about the poetry of everyday life.
