This panoramic photograph shows a flooded suburban landscape in Paris and was made by G. Dangereux. It’s like a washed-out, sepia dream, where buildings peek from the water like memories half-submerged. Look how Dangereux uses tone, it's all about subtlety; the light reflecting off the water becomes this gray blanket, connecting everything. The texture of the villa on the right is heavy, solid, still standing despite the devastation around it. The eye dances with the ruined sheds that disrupt the scene; they are the active marks in this otherwise still image. It makes me think of Eugène Atget and his photographs of Paris, with the same mix of documenting the city and finding something weird and beautiful in the everyday. Art’s not always about answers; sometimes, it's about sitting with the questions.
