This snuffbox was created by Jean Moynat sometime between 1661 and 1761. The entire piece is worked in gold, giving it a uniform, opulent sheen. Observe how Moynat has used relief to depict architectural scenes, transforming the box into a miniature landscape of classical structures. Note the careful arrangement of elements on the lid. The eye is drawn to the archway, framed by other buildings. This creates a sense of depth within the small space. The choice of gold as a medium serves not only an aesthetic purpose but also conveys wealth and status. Moynat's attention to detail – from the textured surfaces to the precise rendering of architectural forms – elevates this functional object to a work of art. The snuffbox invites us to consider how art destabilizes the divide between the practical and the ornamental.
