Robert Frank made this photograph of children in Caerau, Wales. It’s a grainy black and white image, the landscape a study in grey. I imagine Frank standing on that hillside, kids running wild. There’s a rawness to the picture, a snapshot feel, but it’s also so considered. You can feel the texture of the land and the children's woolen clothes. Look at the kid in front, that open mouth! What is she shouting? Look at the way the light falls on her face. The angle of the utility pole. It’s a beautifully composed picture of poverty. I am reminded of other black and white photographers like Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange. Artists are in constant conversation, each bringing their own perspective to the world. A photograph like this, it's not just a picture, it’s a whole world of feeling.
