Cornelius Annor painted this scene, Anadwo Anigye, with what looks like oil paint in, well, I'm not sure when, but it feels contemporary. There's something about the flatness of the figures against the patterned ground that really grabs me. It's like the whole painting is a quilt, with each block carefully pieced together. Look at the way the woman's dress merges with the floor, the patterns almost fighting for dominance. Is it me, or does the patterned floor look like a distorted dance floor? And those ghostly figures in the background? Are they memories, or just more patterns in this visual feast? It reminds me a little of Lynette Yiadom-Boakye’s portraits, but with a wilder, more chaotic energy. It’s a reminder that painting isn't about perfect representation, it's about creating a space for feeling and for seeing the world in new ways.
