Brice Marden made this print, Richard’s Muse, from the Muses and Meres series, and it's like he’s doodling, but with serious intent. The black background feels solid, like a chalkboard, and then you’ve got these looping lines in white and a muted orange, almost like pathways. Look at how the lines twist and turn; they remind me of vines climbing a wall. The white feels raw and immediate. It's as though Marden let his hand wander, each line a new thought or a change of heart. The orange lines act as a frame, almost like they're trying to contain all that restless energy, or maybe they're just adding another layer of conversation. Marden’s work always felt like a dialogue with the history of painting, especially with artists like Cy Twombly, who also turned writing into drawing. Ultimately, this piece reminds us that art is not about answers, but about the questions we ask and the paths we explore.
