Dimensions 1 3/8 x 1 1/4 x 1 1/4 in. (3.49 x 3.18 x 3.18 cm)

This stamp, of unknown date, was created by an anonymous artist from an indeterminate earthy material. It is quite small, roughly an inch and a half in each dimension. Its rough texture and earthy color suggest a direct engagement with the material at hand. It seems likely that it was shaped by hand, and perhaps hardened through firing. The lines carved into the stamp are also quite rudimentary, as if made with a sharp rock or stick. Considering its simplicity, we can imagine it being made by someone who needed it for practical reasons. Perhaps they needed to mark their possessions, or create a repeating pattern on fabric or clay. The act of stamping is itself repetitive, and the nature of the material speaks to a pre-industrial context, far removed from modern modes of mass production. By considering the labor and social context embedded in this simple object, we can see how the history of craft and design is intertwined with the everyday lives of ordinary people.
