About this artwork
Curator: Ah, yes, "Saint Clare of Assisi," from an unknown artist. It's essentially a page from a book, printed long ago. The black ink is so crisp. It really makes the scene pop against the aged paper. Editor: It does feel very striking! I’m curious, what draws your eye when you look at something like this? Curator: Well, I’m immediately struck by the symbolic weight packed into such a small space. Notice Saint Clare holding the cross and book; she's in her habit, standing against that backdrop of what looks like flowers and trees… It's a whole little world right there. What do you make of her expression, or lack thereof? Editor: She does look very peaceful. It makes me wonder about the stories embedded in this image. Thanks!
