Harrie Gerritz's abstract composition on paper is like a playful stage set, isn't it? I can imagine Gerritz building up the image slowly, feeling his way through these shapes and colors – a navy cloud, a pale yellow sun, red and brown blocks. What do they mean? Does it matter? That black semi-circle feels so carefully drawn, with those evenly spaced yellow triangles adding a touch of humor. The way he's balanced those blocks of color reminds me of Morandi, but with a touch more graphic punch. It’s like he’s inviting us into his own visual language, one that feels both personal and universal. It's as if each little form is a word in an unspoken poem. These kinds of paintings remind me that art is an ongoing conversation, artists borrowing and riffing off each other's ideas across time. And it's the ambiguity and uncertainty of it all that makes painting so exciting.
