This watercolor by Jacob Cats, titled "Visit to a Flower Nursery", presents a serene scene imbued with burgeoning life. In the cultural context of the 18th century, the motifs of cultivation and growth resonated deeply with notions of prosperity, nature, and the cycle of life. Note the gesture of the man in the foreground, pointing towards the covered nursery beds. Pointing, seemingly simple, finds echoes throughout art history. From ancient Roman oratory to Renaissance depictions of John the Baptist, it directs our gaze. Yet, its meaning evolves, shaped by context and the collective subconscious. The pointing man, as guide, invokes ideas of instruction and revelation. Like the finger of God in Michelangelo's "Creation of Adam", it signifies a moment of contact, in this case, with the natural world and the secrets it holds. But here, the gesture is tempered, less divine and more human. This underscores the shift towards a more empirical view of the world. This blend of historical echoes and contemporary meaning engages us on a deeply psychological level, inviting us to contemplate humanity’s ever-evolving relationship with nature.

In the 18th century a visit to a flower nursery was a popular spring outing. Fashionably attired ladies and gentlemen here stroll past seed boxes and racks with potted plants. People from Amsterdam, Leiden, and The Hague all came for this purpose to Haarlem, the centre of floristry. This drawing is an illustration of the month of April from a series of the Twelve Months.
