Curatorial notes

Kateryna Bilokur made this still life with spikes and jug with oil on canvas. There’s a striking contrast between the earthy jug and the lush flowers, a tension that creates a dynamic visual experience. The way she’s built up the layers of paint, especially in the petals of the roses, it’s like each stroke is a tiny, deliberate breath. You can almost feel her patience, her meticulous approach to capturing the essence of each bloom. Look closely at the lower right corner, at the way she’s rendered those leaves. Each one is distinct, a tiny universe of greens and browns, meticulously observed and faithfully reproduced. It reminds me a little of Rousseau, that same love of detail, that same feeling of being transported to another world. But Bilokur’s touch is all her own, more delicate, more intimate. It’s a reminder that art is an ongoing conversation.
