Frédéric Boissonnas made this photograph, Rivier in het Tempedal in Thessalië. The approach to mark-making here is all about capturing light. It's fascinating how an artist can use a single colour, or a limited palette, to suggest so much depth and texture, isn’t it? The material aspects really hit home for me. The texture in the trees, the way the light plays on the water's surface – you can almost feel the humidity. When I look at the reflection of the trees in the water, I can almost feel a sense of unease. The photograph speaks to the process of discovery, how much of art is a dance with the unknown. Boissonnas' work reminds me a bit of the Pictorialist movement, where photography was used to create painterly effects. And yet, this image feels distinctly modern, like a snapshot of a fleeting moment. It invites us to pause, to contemplate the beauty and the mystery that surrounds us.
