This is Robert Sammelin’s “Ghostbusters” Screenprint made at Mondo, though I don’t know exactly when. Look at the way Sammelin uses bright, almost clashing colors. It feels like he's embracing the messiness of creation, diving headfirst into the ectoplasm of the artistic process. The texture is flat, it’s a print after all. The screen printing allows for bold, clean blocks of color, which he uses to create a sense of depth and movement. See how the red of Dana’s possessed form bleeds into the blue of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man? It’s like he’s not afraid to let the colors clash and collide. It mirrors the chaotic energy of the movie itself. It reminds me a bit of Japanese pop art, but with a distinctly American sensibility. The image rejects a singular meaning, instead, inviting us to revel in the delightful ambiguity of artistic expression.
