Curatorial notes

This portrait of Johan Goldberg was made with Mezzotint by Charles Howard Hodges. Mezzotint is a printmaking technique that relies on the manipulation of tone to create an image. The metal plate is roughened evenly to hold ink, and then smoothed in areas where the artist wants lighter tones, allowing for rich blacks and subtle gradations of light. In this portrait, the velvety textures achieved through mezzotint lend a sense of depth and presence to the figure of Johan Goldberg. It is easy to forget that this a print, as the details of his face and clothing appear almost photographic. The labor-intensive nature of mezzotint meant that it was used primarily for reproducing portraits and popular paintings, making art accessible to a wider audience. By considering the materials, the making, and the context, we gain a deeper understanding of the artistic skill and cultural values embedded in this seemingly straightforward portrait.
