Henry Wessel snapped this photograph, called Real Estate #90467, at some point in his life. I like the way the pink house sits there—slightly faded, patiently waiting in the sun. The green trim is like an after-thought, but it is also really key to the thing! I wonder what Wessel was thinking? Maybe he saw something funny in how the house tried so hard to be charming, like those little houses kids draw. He took a lot of pictures of everyday life in California. You know, houses, streets, people just going about their day. Like Ed Ruscha, maybe he found something special in the ordinary. It makes me want to grab my camera and see what’s out there. Artists are always looking, always responding to each other, like one big conversation that never ends.
