This mixing bowl was made by Corning Glass Works and is now housed at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. I love the simple elegance of this piece. Its form follows its function, and the green-glazed surface elevates it beyond mere utility. The vibrant, solid green on the exterior moves toward white on the interior. The colour feels so mid-century, doesn’t it? Imagine the ingredients it once held, the cookies it helped create. This bowl is clearly designed to be useful and functional, but the colour brings a certain joy. It is hard to know exactly when it was made, but I would hazard that it was created around the same time as the work of Lucie Rie, whose domestic ware also combined functionality with grace. Art and life blending into one.
