Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita made this print, Siamese tweeling, at an unknown date. He may have started with an idea, or just a feeling, then let the lines lead him as he went along. I wonder, what was it like to create those figures? Their faces seem to express a kind of shock or surprise. The lines have such a simple, raw quality, but there is a lot of detail in the repetition and cross-hatching. This gives them a strange tension. What are they looking at? They're connected, but each seems to exist in their own emotional space. Looking at this print reminds me that artists are always in conversation with one another, borrowing, reacting, and transforming ideas across time. Paintings aren't just about what they depict, but also about the process of their making. The surface invites us to slow down, look closely, and bring our own experiences to the table. What do you think?
