Editor: This drawing, "Old Tidal Mildam, Cos Cob, Connecticut" by Childe Hassam, shows a bridge over rushing water. It feels bleak, almost industrial. What stands out to you? Curator: I see a deliberate construction of national identity. Hassam often depicted American scenes, but this one feels different. It almost feels like an interrogation of the American landscape. Editor: How so? Curator: Well, this isn't the idealized pastoral scene we often see. The "mildam," or mill dam, hints at industry's impact on nature, doesn't it? We see people on the bridge who might be reflecting on this change. What do you make of that? Editor: I hadn't considered that. It definitely adds a layer of complexity to what I initially saw. I'll be paying more attention to these themes going forward. Curator: Absolutely, and Hassam is a great place to continue your exploration.
