Babak-Matveev made this artwork, "Seller of pigeons", in 2014, though the medium is unclear, the digital editing is apparent. The layering of images creates a whimsical, fantastical scene. The colors pop – a hyperreal green jacket, a bright purple hat, and a riot of flowers, all clamoring for attention. There's an intentionally rough quality, the edges aren’t always clean, the colors clash, and it all feels very immediate. It feels like Babak-Matveev isn't afraid to be messy. Look at how the stark white of the flying dove contrasts with the green jacket, it is a pure and vibrant juxtaposition. You could say the layering of images creates a strange kind of depth, like you are looking at a diorama. It reminds me a little of David Hockney, with his bold colours and playfulness. And, like Hockney, it is about exploring the possibilities of the medium, embracing its flaws and imperfections. It’s a reminder that art doesn’t always have to be polished and perfect.
