Curator: As we examine this print, “Heilige Barbara,” crafted between 1583 and 1587 by Johann Sadeler I, currently held at the Rijksmuseum, I’m immediately drawn to the strength radiating from Barbara. Editor: Absolutely, the figure is imbued with this stillness and calm amidst what feels like some kind of impending doom on the horizon. It is almost dreamlike. I love the contrast. Curator: Precisely! The engraving depicts Saint Barbara, known in medieval tradition as the protector against fire and lightning, often depicted with a tower as a symbol of her imprisonment. We can see the tower represented behind her on the right. Editor: Right, the tower—but it's a glamorous, architecturally compelling tower. It isn’t dreary or sinister but, rather, looks to be lit from the inside. A welcoming sort of glow, almost. Then we have the palm branch. Tell me about that? Curator: The palm is associated with victory or triumph, it represents the saint's martyrdom and ultimate victory over death. This representation helped shape public devotion to St. Barbara, reflecting the social concerns around unexpected death. Editor: It gives her an odd sort of power. Her quiet certainty combined with that little tower looming over her shoulder… she feels very relevant, even now. Like a talisman against bad news, beautifully rendered in those intricate lines. It has made me pause, this picture. Curator: Indeed, Sadeler has created a really thought-provoking artwork. By embedding the saint in worldly markers of history and her spiritual life, Sadeler allows a fascinating insight into Barbara and our ongoing, persistent need for assurance. Editor: I completely agree; it is lovely how old pictures manage to stay new with you.
