Gogi Khutsishvili made this small painting, Aknexiswylis Xeobashi, with quick, decisive marks. The colors are muted—blues and browns laid down in horizontal strokes that suggest a landscape both there and not there. I love the way Khutsishvili embraces the physicality of paint. The surface isn't smooth; you can see the movement of the brush, the texture of the paper coming through. It's like he's saying, "Here's the stuff, here's how I put it down." Look at the black lines that draw the house and tree. They feel immediate, like a doodle but a doodle with real purpose. They give the composition a skeleton. The landscape is built out of these marks, a shorthand for trees, fields, and sky. It reminds me a bit of Milton Avery in its simplicity. Both artists have a way of reducing forms to their essence, letting the color and composition do the talking. And like Avery, Khutsishvili shows us that art isn't about perfect representation, it's about feeling, about seeing the world in a new way.
